Tastin' My Way Downtown
The Introduction
I believe it was Anthony Bourdain who said something along the lines of “I can tell you everything that I need to know about a place by eating their food”, or maybe that just sounds like something he would say. Whether it’s getting a bagel at Bagel Oasis in New York City, a pizza from Frank Pepe’s in New Haven, or an Italian beef from Johnnie’s in Chicago, these are foundational moments in understanding a city. Finding those meals that can tell you everything about a place is a driving force behind our travels, and often, the first step in planning our trip itinerary is picking out where we want to eat. Over the years, we have gone through many different methods to find these locations, whether that’s through word of mouth, searching google, or even by reading other blogs similar to this one, however, one method has stuck out ahead of the rest: Reddit. Yep, that’s right. r / *whatever city you’re traveling to* has consistently yielded the best results in finding these city defining meals. So you may be asking “why am I reading a food blog if this person literally just said reddit is a superior method at finding where to eat?”. To that we would say, touche. As experienced reddit foodies, our hope is to combine the best of what we find useful on these city specific subreddits, and combine that with the aspects that we find lacking. Since this is our first foray into something like this, we are sure this will grow as we write more and post more but we do have a general idea of how these blog posts will go.
First, we are aiming to provide targeted reviews of restaurants to city specific subreddits. Often you can find “where to eat”, but that is usually lists of restaurants with little information backing them up. We want to provide posts that help cover not only the food, but other aspects of the dining experience including the service, environment, drinks, and price, too. We hope that this insight can help those visiting a new city or those just looking for a night out, figure out the best spot for them. Our reviews will be scored out of 100 and average both of our inputs, which will consider everything we’ve listed above. Note that the categories will not all be weighted equally, just meaning that sometimes a great environment can be worth more for the final score than average food, etc.
Secondly, as two people that love to eat, we also love to cook and bake. Some of our posts may cover what we’ve been making lately and could hopefully provide some inspiration for you!
As recent transplants to the Milwaukee area, a lot of our content will be focused on food around the greater Milwaukee area as we continue to expand our food footprint in the city. So, please let us know of any of your favorite restaurants as we are always looking for somewhere new to try!
